The SDK provides two interfaces that can be used for integration, these are briefly outlined below:

Client Events

Using the API, a third-party application can be configured to receive notifications when events occur within BigHand Digital Dictation and the functionality of the BigHand Digital Dictation Client can be modified using these events. Examples of such events are NewDraft, SendItem, OpenFromWIP, and CloseInWIP.

When BigHand is integrated with other applications, such as PAS, the document creation process can offer additional functionality. This can include, but would not be limited to, pulling demographic information from other applications, to populate templates with patient name and address, NHS Number and GP details.

3rd Party Dictation Submission

Some BigHand client functionality can be driven from third-party applications by making calls to the API. Users can log in to BigHand and create, modify and submit dictations using the BigHand Recorder and dictation attributes can be updated programmatically.

An integration with the Trust’s EPR might work like this; The clinician searches for the Clinic ID and selects the relevant clinic, the EPR lists all the patients that have or are due to attend the clinic. The clinician clicks the "BigHand Button" in the EPR system, which launches the BigHand recorder and the clinician begins to dictate, leaving the clinician free to review ADT and other patient details within the EPR system. The dictation would inherit the relevant patient demographics and title the dictation automatically; the clinician would then send the dictation in the normal way to be transcribed. All these tasks can be performed independently of the BigHand for Healthcare client; in fact the client does not have to be installed to perform these actions.
